In January 2011, Lizzie Davis independently released her self-titled debut, introducing an intensely soulful brand of folk that draws on timeless standards. Lizzie’s voice stands out in the soundscape, part Leslie Feist and part Ella Fitzgerald, with just enough hoarfrost to make it distinct.
“Latitudes” (2013) is Lizzie’s sophomore release, the product of a week-long torrent of creativity at Mike Mogis’s Another Recording Company. Engineered and mixed by Ben Brodin (First Aid Kit, Bright Eyes, Azure Ray), it builds on debut’s sweet folk-pop sensibilities with fuller arrangements and greater dynamic range. Nevertheless, listeners will be pleased to find that it stays true to what drew them to Lizzie in the first place: the striking melodies, the imaginative lyricism, and, of course, that voice.
